Via conversation with a friend on Instant Messenger during a weekday:
How much of art should be explained and how much of it is about seeing something for yourself?

I think understanding the artists intent should come before the interpreters insights. In seeing something for myself, I'm not openning up to different meaning and understanding. In understanding art in its historical context and seeing the artists intent, it opens up new ideas that maybe I wouldn't have thought of. I think most of art is trying to convey a point and so this is giving the artist due respect for their work. (opinion of a complete novice)
